Now that the rains have finally stopped we’re back wishing for them all over again. Pshew! It’s hot. And the only thing harder to handle than the heat is the thought of those skyrocketing cooling costs on your next energy bill. But don’t despair. Here at Hometown Comfort we have put together a list of 4 quick and easy ways you can take a bite out of big summer cooling bills.
1) Shut it out.
Want to get an edge on cooling your home? Closing your shades and blinds to the scorching summer sun of each day will minimize rising indoor temperatures in your home. It’s that simple. Don’t want excess heat in your home? Use your blinds and shades to shut it out!
2) Become a fan of fans.
The operation of ceiling fans can help take the edge off your air conditioner’s summer cooling load. Whenever possible, operate fans in the rooms you spend your time in. The gentle breeze upon your skin generated by the fan is comforting, and could even substitute for your air conditioner on milder days for a day or two. So why not lessen the strain on your HVAC system, and turn on a fan?
3) Remove any obstructions from the condenser unit.
High winds, summer storms, lawn care, and other things can cause your outdoor condenser unit to become obstructed, and therefore not run at its peak efficiency. Be sure to check it out, and remove all built up or piled up debris that would restrict its airflow. You can use a brush or vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove debris that may be hard to reach.
4) Become generous with air filters.
If there’s any time of the year that’s hardest on your air filter, it’s definitely summer. During these hot, humid months your air filter gets dirty the fastest. A constantly running HVAC system circulates more air, which means more airborne particles trapped in the filter. During this time, we recommend regular monthly changing of your air filters for maximum efficiency in cooling and air quality effectiveness.
