If you’re a homeowner, you’ve probably encountered the term SEER ratings before, particularly if you’ve shopped for a high efficiency air conditioner. In short, SEER refers to a system’s relative efficiency. But just what does SEER really mean?

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER, is a standard used to measure the amount of cooling output of a system per unit of energy consumed. In short, the higher the SEER rating, the more efficiently a system will operate. That means means less energy is consumed with greater performance levels with a higher SEER rating.

The SEER rating of a unit is determined through testing performance during a typical cooling season. It is a measure that is quite similar to automotive mpg. The cooling output of the unit within the season is divided by the total electric energy input during the same period.

The U.S. Department of Energy mandated at the beginning of this year that all split system central air conditioners installed in the Southeastern Region of the US must be at least 14 SEER. Although initially, some may balk at the price tag of higher SEER units, there’s no question the extra cost will be recovered in energy savings.
